Climbing Gear FAQ
What climbing rope should a beginner buy?
Beginners should start with a single dynamic rope, 9.5-10.2mm in diameter and 60-70 meters long. Thicker ropes (10mm+) are more durable and easier to handle. Look for UIAA-certified ropes from brands like Petzl, Mammut, or Sterling.
How do I choose a climbing harness?
A harness should fit snugly around your waist and legs without pinching. Sport climbing harnesses are lightweight with minimal gear loops. Trad harnesses have more gear loops and padding. Try on several models, as fit varies significantly between brands.
What belay device should I use?
Assisted-braking devices like the Petzl GriGri are the safest option and strongly recommended. Tube-style devices (ATC) are simpler and more versatile for rappelling but require more attentive belaying. Always learn proper belay technique before climbing outdoors.
How should climbing shoes fit?
Climbing shoes should fit snugly with no dead space, but not cause pain. Beginners should choose a slightly looser fit for comfort on longer sessions. Moderate-downturn shoes with a flat profile work well for all-around climbing. Break-in time varies; leather stretches more than synthetic.
When should I replace my climbing gear?
Retire ropes after visible damage, a significant fall, or 2-5 years of regular use. Harnesses and slings should be retired after 5-7 years even without visible wear. Carabiners and belay devices last longer but should be retired if dropped from height or if the gate doesn't close smoothly.
