Camping Gear FAQ

What's the difference between 3-season and 4-season tents?

3-season tents handle spring, summer, and fall conditions with good ventilation and rain protection. 4-season tents are built for winter with stronger poles, less mesh, and snow-shedding designs. Most campers only need a 3-season tent unless they plan winter or high-altitude camping.

What sleeping bag temperature rating do I need?

Choose a sleeping bag rated 10-15 degrees below the coldest temperature you expect. For summer camping, a 35-45F bag works well. Spring and fall camping calls for a 15-30F bag. Winter camping requires a 0F or lower rating. Down bags are lighter and more compressible; synthetic bags perform better when wet.

What type of camping stove should I buy?

Canister stoves (like the Jetboil Flash or MSR PocketRocket) are best for quick boiling and backpacking. Liquid fuel stoves perform better in cold weather and at altitude. For car camping, two-burner propane stoves offer the most cooking versatility.

Do I need a sleeping pad?

Yes. A sleeping pad insulates you from the cold ground (which can drain body heat 25x faster than air) and provides cushioning. Inflatable pads offer the best comfort-to-weight ratio. Foam pads are cheaper, lighter, and virtually indestructible but less comfortable.

What cookware do I need for camping?

At minimum, bring a pot (1-2 liters), a mug, and a spork. For car camping, add a frying pan and a set of nesting pots. Titanium cookware is the lightest for backpacking; hard-anodized aluminum offers good heat distribution for general camping.
